There are over 160 cancer support groups in metropolitan and rural Victoria including six language-specific groups recognised by The Cancer Council Victoria. The majority are general cancer groups and there are about thirty per cent more in rural areas than metropolitan areas.
The groups are organised in different ways. More common are the self-help groups, which are run by people with cancer or their family and friends (often with the help of health professionals) and facilitated groups which are run by health professionals, usually a registered nurse or social worker who can bring special skills, such as coping with loss and grief.
