Echocardiography, Doppler and Colour Flow Studies are available for inpatients and outpatients.  Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE) services are only available through the Cardiology Advanced Registrar.

CPX tests provide a dynamic assessment of cardiac and respiratory function.
CPX testing may be indicated in two main groups of patients.

*Patients scheduled for major surgery, e.g. anterior resection, major vascular surgery or thoracic surgery who are either over 60 years of age or are known to have cardiac or pulmonary disease are tested as outpatients prior to surgery

*Medical patients for investigation of respiratory or cardiac disease

These clinics identify patients who would benefit from insertion of a permanent pacemaker, perform the periodical checks on the pacemakers and also recommend management of patients with ongoing arrhythmia problems. 
These are Medicare funded clinics.

The test requires patients to walk on an exercise treadmill.  The test is therefore not suitable for patients whose exercise capacities may be limited by conditions such as:

—    Obesity				
—    Osteoarthritis - hips and knees
—    COAD 				
—    Peripheral vascular disease

Certain changes on the resting ECG also invalidate this test such as: 

—    Atrial fibrillation
—    Left bundle branch block 	
—    Paced rhythm
—    Widespread ST-T changes	
—    WPW syndrome

Details:		24 hour, 7 days a week service for acute myocardial infarctions

The Cardiac Angiography Laboratory provides a modern diagnostic and treatment facility for the assessment of coronary artery disease and other cardiac conditions. The service is available after consultation with a Cardiologist for inpatients and elective outpatients.

Services include: 
—    Angiography
—    Percutaneous Coronary Interventions, such as stenting
—    Temporary and permanent cardiac pacemakers.
