National Capital Private Hospital has the only private cardiac angiography suite and coronary care unit in the ACT.  Our highly skilled nursing staff work in partnership with cardiologists to ensure that all patients receive the highest possible standard of care.

The Coronary Care unit has been designed to provide highly specialised care to patients with acute cardiac illnesses or those who have had a procedure performed in the angiography suite.  We are also equipped with telemetry monitoring ensuring all patients peace of mind at all times.

The consultant cardiologists manage all coronary care patients, supported by experienced medical practitioners who are available on a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week basis.  This ensures that each patient receives immediate attention should the need arise.

National Capital Private Hospital

Pre-Surgery:

All surgical clients awaiting heart surgery in the ACT and close surrounding areas of NSW are invited to attend a pre-surgical education session with their family.

This session covers expectations of pre and postoperative care and enables the opportunity for referral to other health professionals to ease the client's journey and to also be informed fully about going home after surgery.

Post-Surgery:

All surgical clients attend a postoperative education talk session before discharge from hospital with family in attendance. This session is conducted by a Cardiac Rehabilitation nurse and physiotherapist.

All surgical clients in the ACT are reviewed two weeks post operative in the cardiology department by the cardiac rehabilitation nurse.

Range of cardiac conditions both acute and chronic cardiac disease such as: ishaemic heart disease, valve disease, coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias & pulmonary hypertension.

Canberra Hospital - Cardiology

Cardiac Rehabilitation commences in the inpatient setting where a cardiac rehabilitation registered nurse visits all patients who have had a cardiac event, including acute myocardial infarct, stents, coronary artery disease for medical management, heart failure and Cardiomyopathy. 

The initial visit involves education re basic heart anatomy, information about their diagnosis, reassurance about returning to normal activities, risk factor management, self management principles, medications and importance of follow up with general practitioner and specialist on discharge.

Two weeks post cardiac event the client is reviewed clinically in the Cardiology department by the registered nurse and risk factor management and education is reinforced. The need for referrals to multi disciplinary team is common at this assessment.

The client is commenced in the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at three weeks post event. The program is a six week program attending twice-weekly involving exercise and education. This program is held at the exercise rehabilitation gym building three level one, near the Physiotherapy Department.The program also delivers the pre and post operative education of all cardiac surgical clients. This involves a group or one to one education session prior to surgery and also before discharging from hospital

The Canberra Heart Clinic provides; consultations, pre-op assessments, Pacemaker follow-ups, transthoracic echos, exercise stress echos, ECG performance and reporting, 24hr Holter and 96hr event monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, percutaneous coronary interventions.
