Safety warning: first-generation antihistamine use in children
Promethazine (Phenergan) must not be used in children under 6 years of age, due to the potential for fatal respiratory depression, psychiatric and CNS events.
First-generation antihistamine medicines can cause serious harm to young children. Promethazine is a first-generation antihistamine — see below for a list of products that contain promethazine.
The use of first-generation antihistamines for sleep and behaviour disturbances in children and adolescents can be dangerous and is strongly discouraged.
