Safety warning: first-generation antihistamine use in children
First-generation antihistamine medicines can cause serious harm to young children. Diphenhydramine is a first-generation antihistamine — see below for a list of products that contain diphenhydramine.
You should not use first-generation antihistamines for the treatment of cough, cold and flu symptoms in children under 6 years. You should not give first-generation antihistamines to children under 2 years for any reason. This includes first-generation antihistamine products available over the counter (OTC).
The use of first-generation antihistamines for sleep and behaviour disturbances in children and adolescents can be dangerous and is strongly discouraged.
