Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA) is a Commonwealth statutory agency. ASEA was established in 2013, to administer the Asbestos National Strategic Plan. ASEA oversees national actions to improve asbestos awareness and the effective and safe management, removal and disposal of asbestos.

Vision and mission

ASEA aims to prevent exposure to asbestos fibres in order to eliminate asbestos-related diseases in Australia by coordinating the implementation of the Asbestos National Strategic Plan.

How ASEA can help

ASEA provides accurate and timely information about the potential health risks of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) to workers and the community through a range of communications materials and reports.

This includes practical and easy to understand information on asbestos safety in the home, workplace and the environment. ASEA also:

  • develops nationally consistent communication strategies and awareness initiatives
  • undertakes research and analysis to produce asbestos safety research reports and improve policy and practice
  • administers the National Asbestos Exposure Register
  • provides advice on who to contact regarding asbestos safety concerns, health risks, support and advocacy groups and asbestos import and export permit requirements.

ASEA can provide general assistance and advice but does not enforce the law.

Asbestos cement roofs | Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency

Asbestos cement roofs are particularly concerning as they are in the poorest condition, having been directly exposed to years of sun, wind, rain and hail, as well as more frequent disaster events. Heavy rains can wash fibres into guttering, contaminating surrounding areas. As asbestos roofs age, they also become brittle, increasing the risk of breakage and even collapse.
